Legal Custody in California

In California, legal custody is the ability to make decisions about a minor child’s life. These decisions can include the school the minor children attends, the doctor the child will visit, or the classes the child can take. Sometimes a custody order will identify what types of decisions each parent can make unilaterally and what decisions require both parents’ consent. If the judgment or order is silent, the parents can work together to find a solution. If a compromise is unattainable, then one party must petition the court for a decision.
